Andrés & Juanita: Innovative Tagua Artisans
At Minga Fair Trade Imports, we are proud to share the inspiring journey of our dear friends, Andres and Juanita, who have been with us for over 15 years. Their dedication to their craft and their unwavering perseverance have not only transformed their own lives but also touched the lives of many others. Through their exceptional work with tagua, a sustainable “vegetable ivory,” they have built a thriving business and their own home, exemplifying the profound impact of fair trade.
How A Simple Bracelet Built A Home
In the heart of Ecuador, where economic challenges are a daily reality for many, the dream of owning a home can seem out of reach. Official statistics paint a stark picture: as of June 2019, 4.4 million of 17 million Ecuadorians were living in poverty, with 1.6 million in extreme poverty. More than a third of the population lived in rented housing, and over 2 million people lacked access to regular housing.
Against this backdrop, the success of Andres and Juanita is extraordinary. Working with tagua, a sustainable and eco-friendly material often referred to as “vegetable ivory,” these talented artisans have created beautiful, handcrafted jewelry that resonates with customers around the world. One of their most popular creations, a simple yet elegant bracelet, has played a significant role in changing their lives.
That bracelet was the Rock Stretch Bracelet, which since its creation has sold 137,126 pieces. This bracelet on its own helped Andrés and Juanita achieve something truly remarkable – it helped them build their own home.
Meet The Rock Stretch Bracelet
Available in Spring/Summer, and Fall/Winter styles with new color batches each season, this bracelet moves quickly while brightening up displays.
Owning a home is a milestone that represents stability, security, and dignity. It is a powerful statement of what can be achieved when artisans are given the opportunity to thrive. In a country where millions struggle with housing insecurity, the success of Andres and Juanita serves as an example of the potential within every community.
Looking Ahead
Andrés and Juanita were thrilled to be homeowners, but they had other dreams, too. Always looking to innovate, they smartly took advantage of a loan from Minga to purchase a laser engraver. This has transformed their business, leading to the creation of their next bestseller, the Tagua Seed of Wisdom—laser-engraved seeds with inspirational phrases, of which they have sold 77,740 in handheld and keychain forms.
Empowering Artisans, Transforming Lives
At Minga Fair Trade Imports, we are committed to empowering artisans by providing them with fair wages, ethical working conditions, and opportunities for growth. The story of Andres and Juanita is just one example of the profound impact fair trade can have. By choosing to support fair trade, you are not only purchasing unique, handcrafted products but also contributing to the dreams and futures of artisans around the world.
Join us in celebrating the incredible achievements of our artisan partners and help us continue to make a difference, one bracelet at a time.
