Luis and his wife Elena work as weavers making children’s sweaters. They live in Carabuela, a community outside of Otavalo in Imbabura province. They enjoy their work very much and were able to finish their small house because of the income from working with Minga in fair trade. Carabuela is a community dedicated to the art of weaving, so much so that it has become the “inheritance” that parents hand down to their children. Luis’ father taught him to hand-weave at the tender age of 8 years. Continuing the tradition, Luis taught his wife’s cousin Jaime the art as well.
